While
I began my painting career as a watercolorist and have enjoyed immensely
the challenges and beauty of the medium, I found that I struggled for
a breakthrough that would inevitably take me to the next level.
Acrylics have allowed me to open my mind and experiment. It has renewed
my creative spirit. I feel that the newer acrylic paintings are more about
"Laurie Samuels", and the life experiences that are influencing
me. The paintings contain elements of beautiful things that have always
been a part of me. Bold textures, lush color, nature, and yes even furniture!
My experiences as an interior designer and my love of gardening and the
outdoors have spilled over into the new attempts of expressing myself
through my art.
I began this experimental journey in the acrylic medium in June of 2005
at the urging of some artist friends. Reluctantly, I tried some small
pieces but could see a glimmer of something special there. While changing
mediums is always challenging, the excitement of allowing me to try whatever
comes to mind and being open to failure, as acrylics are so forgiving,
has been just the ticket I needed to send my artwork into a new and different
direction. The best part is I really have no idea where it will lead me...it
truly is a creative journey!
